TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 300 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal, financial, technology and telecom sectors, while U.S. stock markets also fell. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 289.70 points at 35,412.83. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 487.17 points at 51,934.03. The S&P 500 index was down 37.34 points at 7,582.64, while the Nasdaq composite was down 182.82 points at 26,003.59. The Canadian dollar traded for 71.84 cents US compared with 71.90 cents US on Monday. The October crude oil contract was up US$3.30 at US$104.69 per barrel.
