A China-based appliance company is recalling more than 130,000 refrigerators sold in Canada and the U.S. due to fire and burn hazards, with one death reported south of the border. In a recall notice shared on Thursday, the company stated that it is recalling 10,045 Galanz Retro refrigerator units in Canada, sold in the colour red between December 2018 and December 2020, and manufactured in China. The affected units’ internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite, increasing the risk of fire and burn hazards, the recall stated. As of Sept. 21, the company has received reports of two incidents but no injuries in Canada. In July, a similar recall notice was shared by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that impacted 121,680 units in the U.S. The affected unit were sold in black, blue, red and white between December 2018 and December 2020. The recall stated that the CPSC is aware of 34 reports of fire involving the refrigerators, one of which resulted in a fatality, according to a local fire department report. Product description The Canadian recall involves fridges that measure about 147 cm high, 61 cm deep and 53 cm wide, with a capacity of 7.6 cu. ft. The fridges have doors with handles on the left side, three adjustable glass shelves, one drawer and one glass shelf. The top of the freezer has a separate door, and “Galanz” printed on the front. The units were manufactured by Zhongshan Galanz Consumer Electric Appliances Co. Ltd., which is based in Zhongshan, Guangdong. Owners should immediately stop using the product, unplug it and go to the company website to complete a registration form to schedule an in-home repair, the recall stated. Recalled products cannot be redistributed, sold or given away in Canada, as per the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.
