‘Highly impactful winter storm’ with significant snowfall and ice pellets headed this way

Preparations are underway in anticipation of another major snowstorm heading this way.

A “highly impactful winter storm” is headed our way.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning Tuesday that spreads right across the region, with “significant snowfall” expected to make travel difficult.

The storm is expected to move into the area Wednesday evening and ease off by Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall anticipated for Wednesday night.

The national weather agency says northeasterly winds gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour could result in blowing snow and reduced visibility on the roads.

By late Tuesday afternoon, the agency issued a snowfall warning, with upwards of 25 centimetres possible in some areas around Barrie.

It added that snow could become mixed with ice pellets early Thursday morning over some areas, adding motorists should avoid travel if at all possible.

Provincial police urge motorists to adjust their driving to the changing weather if they must venture out.

“Whiteout conditions can change in an instant. Blowing snow and zero visibility make driving dangerous. Even with emergency lights flashing at an accident scene, you might not see them until it’s too late,” Huronia West OPP stated in a post on social media about the impending storm.

Provincial police also remind motorists involved in collisions to remain in their vehicles for their safety and the safety of others.

”If you don’t have to drive in these conditions, please stay home. Protect yourself and our first responders," police concluded.
