Three people have been arrested and charged just days after a downtown Barrie shooting that left a 30-year-old man in critical condition. Police say violence erupted outside a Dunlop Street East nightclub Sunday during the early morning hours, following an altercation involving multiple people. Brett Carleton, lead investigator and sergeant of the Barrie Police Major Crime Unit, says, “We believe that some individuals recorded others who became upset as a result; an argument ensued, and then, unfortunately, the shooting occurred.” The whole incident was captured on several surveillance cameras in the downtown area. The victim, 30-year-old Jordan Sproats, was shot at close range according to police. He was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Sproats’ father, Bob, told CTV News the bullet passed through his son’s chest, grazing his spine and lungs. Since the shooting, Jordan has undergone two surgeries. Doctors have removed his spleen, left kidney and gallbladder. On Tuesday, members of the Barrie Police Tactical Support Unit executed a search warrant at a Fitton Street home in Midland, taking three people into custody without incident. “It was a lot of public assistance,” says Carleton. During the search, police say they recovered a shell casing and a bullet that had lodged in the window of a nearby business and seized a loaded .40‑calibre handgun believed to be connected to the shooting. “We believe the hole in the window was the bullet that passed through the victim,” continues Carleton. “It was extremely dangerous, and I am surprised that no other individuals were injured.” A 20-year-old Barrie man now faces multiple firearm-related charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. A 23-year-old Barrie woman has been charged as an accessory after the fact to attempted murder and with robbery of a cellphone. A 32-year-old Midland woman is also charged as an accessory after the fact to attempted murder. “We are absolutely ecstatic; we all broke down in tears. It was amazing,” says Bob Sproats in tears to CTV News. “The officers did a fantastic job in how quickly they were able to apprehend the people.” Police are asking anyone who was downtown at the time of the shooting and may have captured photos or video to come forward. Officers say they are also looking to speak with a woman who had her cellphone stolen during the incident. Authorities have confirmed they are not looking for any additional suspects. The Ontario Provincial Police Underwater Search and Recovery Unit assisted investigators by recovering evidence from Kempenfelt Bay near Barrie’s downtown. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
