Federal election roundup: Local winners reaction

CTV News declared a Liberal win in the 45th federal election.

Voters made their voices heard in Monday’s election, handing Mark Carney’s Liberals a minority government and sending several familiar faces back to Ottawa to represent local ridings.

BARRIE SOUTH-INNISFIL

Incumbent John Brassard has won a fourth term with a strong lead over the other candidates vying for the riding. Brassard was first elected to represent the riding in 2015.

Liberal John Olthuis came in second with 36 per cent of the vote, far short of Brassard’s nearly 60 per cent.

The political veteran aims to hold the Liberals accountable and find common ground on dealing with the U.S. tariff threat.

“We have to make sure that Canada is prosperous and the people that are our citizens, our neighbours, and the many people that are here tonight have opportunities to succeed, particularly our young people,” he said following his victory.

The riding was renamed from Barrie-Innisfil following the 2022 election.

BARRIE-SPRINGWATER-ORO-MEDONTE

It was a race to the finish in the riding of Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte as PC incumbent Doug Shipley took the win over Liberal candidate Dr. Rose Zacharias.

Shipley held onto his seat in Ottawa for a third term. He received 56 per cent of the vote to Zacharias’ nearly 40 per cent.

Following news of his win, Shipley reflected on another term in opposition.

“How we work together there, well that’s going to be up to the leaders and how we go forward on that - I’ll just represent here as best I can.”

The riding covers the northern part of Barrie, plus Springwater Township and Oro-Medonte.

BRUCE-GREY-OWEN SOUND

Conservative incumbent Alex Ruff kept the riding blue with a win over Liberal candidate Anne Marie Watson.

Ruff gathered more than 50 per cent of the vote, ahead of Watson, who received nearly 36 per cent.

The riding is on the north coast of Lake Huron and south shores of Georgian Bay.

DUFFERIN-CALEDON

Incumbent Kyle Seeback held onto the riding for the Conservatives. Seeback has represented the riding since 2019, and won with a strong lead over the other candidates.

Liberal Malalai Halimi finished second, with the NDP following in third place.

The riding covers Orangeville, Mono, East Garafraxa, Grand Valley and Caledon.

PARRY SOUND-MUSKOKA

Conservative Scott Aitchison held onto the cottage country riding, with a win over Liberal Geordie Sabbagh.

The Conservative incumbent will serve a third term as Member of Parliament, after campaigning on his record and familiarity with the riding, which has historically leaned Conservative.

The former Huntsville mayor won with over 50 per cent of the vote. Sabbagh came in second with 40 per cent of the vote.

The riding includes Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Muskoka Lakes, Huntsville, and Parry Sound and extends up the edge of the Nickel Belt.

NEW TECUMSETH–GWILLIMBURY

The new riding of New Tecumseth-Gwillimbury has gone to the Conservatives. Scot Davidson won over Liberal Mike Hanrahan.

Davidson represented Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury, and Georgina as the MP for York-Simcoe since 2019 and was re-elected in the 2019 and 2021 general elections. ​

The newly formed riding consists of Bradford, New Tecumseth and East Gwillimbury.

NEWMARKET-AURORA

Sandra Cobena held onto the riding for the Conservatives, just taking the win over Liberal Jennifer McLachlan. Cobena won with 50 per cent support, while McLachlan finished shy with 47 per cent of the vote.

The riding lies entirely in York Region, and covers the northern part of Aurora.

SIMCOE-GREY

Terry Dowdall was re-elected to represent Simcoe-Grey, holding onto the traditionally blue riding for the Conservatives.

Dowdall won with nearly 50 per cent of the vote over Liberal Bren Munro, his largest total yet. The former mayor of Essa was first elected in 2019.

“We’re there for everybody,” he said following his win. “It’s a minority, there’s going to be another election sooner, probably rather than later, and hopefully at that time we’ll see if we have another opportunity to see what kind of work we do,” he said of the Liberal’s minority government.

SIMCOE NORTH

Voters in Simcoe North have voted to keep the riding a Tory stronghold.

Adam Chambers will serve another term representing Simcoe North for the Conservatives.

Chambers was first elected in 2019. He won in a tight race with 50 per cent of the vote compared to Liberal Ryan Rocca’s 40 per cent.

He said he’s ready to bring the issues that matter most with him to Ottawa. “People are concerned about the economy, they’re concerned about taxes, they’re concerned about their jobs, and of course housing and crime.”

YORK-DURHAM

A Conservative will represent the riding of York-Durham.

Jacob Mantle will head to Ottawa after winning 56 per cent of the vote over Liberal Robert Grossi’s 38.7 per cent.

More than 7.3 million voters cast their ballots in advanced polling last weekend, according to Elections Canada, which is a significant increase over the last federal election in 2021.
