Provincial police want you to stay vigilant this holiday season to avoid becoming a victim of porch piracy. “December is historically one of the busiest times of the year for both shoplifting and package thefts,” OPP stated in a Thursday release. Police say with more people shopping in stores and online, thieves see more opportunity to strike during this busy time. “While the holidays are meant for joy, sadly, theft tends to increase,” police said. “Taking a few simple precautions can really help keep your season safe.” OPP suggest shoppers stay aware of their surroundings, keep purses zipped and wallets in front pockets, and avoid leaving purchases visible inside cars. The service says it’s also smart to park in well-lit spots and always lock your vehicle. Never leave bags or personal items unattended. To fight porch piracy, police recommend tracking your deliveries and bringing packages inside as soon as they arrive. Other strategies include signing up for delivery alerts, using parcel lockers or pickup spots, or having packages sent to your workplace can help. Police also say installing doorbell cameras or visible security systems, and asking trusted neighbors to grab packages when you’re away, can also discourage thieves. For retailers, police say having enough staff during peak hours, keeping clear sightlines in stores, and securing valuable items can help reduce theft.
