After much debate, Orillia Council is moving ahead with plans for a new hospital and the future of the University Avenue lands. The decision was made at Monday’s council meeting. Before putting pen to paper, councillors say they are seeking independent legal advice on the agreements. At its meeting last week, council directed city staff to bring in independent legal counsel as it continues working with Lakehead University and Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH). The city says the legal review will not halt planning for the new hospital, which continues through the provincial capital process. “Orillia will have a growing campus and Orillia will have a new hospital. Our residents deserve both, done properly,” said Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac. “Council passed the resolution because we all want the same thing: the right decision, not just the fastest one,” he said. “Completing the process carefully protects everyone at this table, including our partners.” Council says the goal is to allow Lakehead’s Orillia campus to grow, move forward with a new hospital and make sure the final agreements protect residents while following city policies and laws. Parts of the meeting were held behind closed doors as talks involved land and confidential legal advice. The City of Orillia says more information will be released as the final agreements get underway.
