Leaf and yard waste collection returns across Simcoe County

It’s that time of year again when the vibrant fall leaves blanket lawns across Simcoe County. The county’s biweekly Leaf and Yard Waste Collection program is back and resuming curbside pickup this week.

Residents are reminded to set their material at the curb by Monday at 7 a.m. of their collection week.

Accepted containers include Kraft paper bags, cardboard boxes, or open bins. The county does not accept pet waste, plastic, sod, soil, or sand.

Branches must be bundled with natural twine, with each bundle no longer than two metres and no wider than 30 centimetres. Individual branches should not exceed seven centimetres in diameter.

It is important to note that this program does not apply to residents in Barrie or Orillia.

Manage your yard waste at home

If you prefer to handle yard waste on your own property, there are several benefits.

Mulching consists of leaving a thin layer of shredded leaves on your lawn and mowing over them can add nutrients, retain moisture, and help suppress weed growth. A standard lawn mower can be equipped with a mulching blade, available at most local hardware stores.

Be sure not to leave the layer of leaves too thick; spread them out evenly or rake any excess for composting or collection.

Grasscycling is the practice of recycling grass clippings by leaving them on the lawn after you’re finished mowing. The nutrient is a natural fertilizer, and it helps retain moisture in the soil, especially during hot and dry periods.

This process leads to a deeper, healthier root system that increases your lawn’s resistance to disease, drought, and insects.
