Georgian College announced on Friday plans to close its Orillia and Muskoka campuses and move programs to Barrie. Officials say the decision aims to save $23.5 million over five years and put the institution on a stronger financial path. “This is a difficult decision that we know will be felt deeply by our students, employees and communities,” said Kevin Weaver, president and CEO of Ontario-based Georgian College. “Recognizing these are challenging times and the sector is experiencing a labour disruption, I still felt it was important to advise our community of the decision,” he continued. “It’s the right decision for the long-term sustainability of the college and the success of our students.” Despite the changes, the college said student graduation timelines and program completion dates would not be affected. Officials emphasized consolidating would enhance the student experience, and offer connections with a wider network of employers. “While our physical footprint will be smaller, our commitment to these regions remains strong through partnerships, community initiatives and ongoing support for students. This decision helps Georgian continue delivering high-quality programs and impactful outcomes for students and communities,” Weaver noted. Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) issued a statement shortly after the announcement, saying it was taken “off guard” by the news. For the last two weeks, roughly 10,000 full-time support staff have been on the picket lines fighting for better job security. “These closures will have devastating effects in Bracebridge and Orillia, shuttering opportunities in local communities, and forcing relocation to Georgian’s main Barrie campus,” OPSEU stated, highlighting how the recent move brings Georgian College’s campus closures to three this year. In May, the college announced the suspension of programs at its Collingwood campus. The Orillia campus will shut its doors in summer 2026, with Muskoka set to close in August 2026. Programs will move to Barrie starting in May.
