Case of Barrie teacher accused of luring child returns to court

The criminal case of a Barrie public school teacher accused of sex crimes involving a teen was addressed Monday in a virtual courtroom.

A lawyer representing teacher Kyle Pitman, 43, appeared on behalf of defence counsel Peter Thorning, three months since Pitman was charged by police with child luring and several other sex crimes including sexual exploitation, invitation to touching, accessing, making, printing, publishing or possessing child pornography, and making sexually explicit material of a child.

Pitman, a teacher for about 13 years, was granted bail following his arrest. His sureties pledged $7,500 to secure his release from jail under strict conditions. He is ordered not to possess any electronic devices to access the internet and cannot be at or near a school or children unless in the company of his sureties.

Publication bans imposed protect the identity of the victim from being revealed along with any evidence heard in court.

Barrie police said the investigation began after receiving a report from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Police said emergency orders with internet service providers confirmed the identity and age of the teen, as well as the identity, age and location of the accused. Police revealed several computer devices belonging to the accused were seized for further analysis.

Pitman, who coached youth baseball and was recently named coach of the year, also taught French immersion, and spent more than a decade teaching in Mississauga and Brampton before moving to the Barrie area two years ago.

The matter is scheduled to return to a virtual courtroom in August following a judicial pre-trial. The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court.
