Caledon is calling on residents to help pick one of five different kinds of birds as the official bird of the municipality. On its website, the town claims to be home to a “rich diversity” of birds, but the list residents can choose from has been narrowed down to the Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Kingbird, Great Horned Owl, Green Heron and Red-breasted Nuthatch. The call for an official bird comes almost a month after Caledon received its Bird Friendly City (BFC) certification. The BFC certification program is a national initiative that recognizes municipalities taking “meaningful and measurable” action to protect and support local bird populations within urban, rural and natural environments.
