Blowing snow warning ends, cold warning still in effect with -35 wind chills possible

Sunday is going to be another day of extreme cold in Simcoe Muskoka and across the province as cold temperatures and extreme wind chills are once again in the forecast.

Although its blowing snow warning ended Saturday evening, Environment Canada’s yellow cold warning remains in effect for Barrie, with expected wind chills between minus 30 and minus 35. The warning spans almost the entire province, from Windsor to the Ottawa region, and from the Great Toronto Area to northern Ontario, including the shores of Lake Huron.

The weather agency says the most extreme conditions will take place early Sunday morning and possibly both Sunday night and Monday morning.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” said the weather agency in its warning statement. “Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.”

Environment Canada urges dressing warmly in multiple layers and warns that frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, particularly in wind chill conditions.

“Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming.”

Vehicles should be stocked up with emergency supplies that include extra blankets and booster cables.
