Recreational fishing season opens Wednesday in P.E.I., and the province is encouraging Islanders to take part in the popular outdoor activity. “Each year, more than 11,000 angling licences are issued across the province, highlighting the continued popularity of recreational fishing on Prince Edward Island,” says the Minister of Land and Environment Darlene Compton in a news release Monday. Angling licences are required by everyone 16 years of age or older. Children under 16 don’t need one. Anglers are also asked to report any tagged trout they catch, particularly in the Morell and Winter rivers, by taking a picture and calling the number on the tag. Fish tagging helps with monitoring trout populations, and a small prize will be provided for each tag reported. The province also notes invasive species are a growing concern, naming the brown bullhead, a small type of catfish, as a frequent invader. “Any brown bullheads caught should be kept and not returned to the water,” the news release reads. “Whether you’re an experienced angler or trying it for the first time, fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends,” says Compton.
