P.E.I. to spend $1.6B on new hospital, schools in next five years

The Prince Edward Island government plans to spend $1.6 billion on a new hospital, elementary schools, CT scanners, bridges and roads over the next five years.

The major infrastructure announcement was part of the provincial government’s 2026-2027 capital budget, which is estimated to be $486 million in expenditures. The 2025-2026 estimated capital budget was $482 million.

“This budget allows us to rise to today’s challenges while keeping our eye on the opportunities of the future,” said Minister of Finance Jill Burridge in a news release. “It is focused, practical, and grounded in what Islanders need most. These projects are necessary and, while we recognize the scale of this commitment, we are focused on accountable and sustainable delivery; Islanders deserve nothing less.”

Highlights from the five-year plan include:

• $296 million on roads, bridges and highways
• $132.2 million to create the Kings County campus, including a community health centre and hospital
• $131 million to complete a mental health campus
• $109 million for a new school in Stratford
• $65.4 million to build new elementary schools in East Royalty, West Royalty and Georgetown
• $44 million to renovate high schools
• $14.5 million to build a new Summerside school that’s expected to open in 2030
• $14 million on supporting senior care
• $11.9 million for two CT scanners at Kings County Memorial Hospital and Western Hospital
• $600,000 on a new subsea power cable
