Search called off for possible missing boater on P.E.I.: RCMP

The RCMP on Prince Edward Island has called off a search for a possible missing boater in Egmont Bay.

East Prince RCMP says officers received a report of distress flares, possibly coming from a fishing dory in Egmont Bay, around 8:45p.m. Saturday.

“ A witness reported that the boat had remained stationary for several hours as daylight faded, which was considered unusual,” said the RCMP in a news release. “The witness noted that a man was on board. While police were en route, the witness reported seeing distress flares in the same area.”

Police say the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, along with the Tyne Valley Fire Department and RCMP, carried out a comprehensive two-day search by land and water but no person, boat truck or trailer associated with the report was found.

“At this time, neither PEI RCMP nor New Brunswick RCMP have received any reports of missing persons that could be linked to this incident,” said the RCMP.

Police said Monday morning they have called off the search.
