Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, will get $19 million in combined funding to build 70 rental homes, according to an announcement by the federal government, the province, and the town on Friday. The development will see two buildings across from a local middle school, offering the new homes at 105 Kingston Rd., according to a news release from the Government of P.E.I. The province says there will be family-sized three-bedroom units, accessible homes for seniors, and mid-market units intended for student affordability. The news release says, “solving Canada’s housing crisis requires immediate action to bring down costs, cut red tape, and build homes more quickly.” Federal Housing Minister Gregor Robertson says the Canadian government is committed to driving housing supply to bring its costs down. He adds this project in Cornwall is, “an example of what’s possible when all levels of governments and communities work together. It’s also another step forward in our bold, ambitious plan to build Canada strong.” Much of the funds come from the federal “Build Canada Homes” initiative, which aims to increase the pace of affordable home building. “It is building deeply affordable and community housing for low-income households and partnering with private market developers to build affordable homes for the Canadian middle class,” the news release reads. At the announcement, Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt emphasized the project’s ability to provide quality housing for families, seniors, and students.
