The province of Nova Scotia says the QEII Halifax Infirmary expansion project has reached a “significant milestone.” Construction is now complete on the podium section of the new acute care tower. The podium is the lower, wider portion of the building that forms the base of the tower. The province says the podium will house a range of hospital services, infrastructure and support functions – including a new, larger emergency department. “Over the next year, it will be exciting to watch the acute tower rise towards its full 14-storey height. The Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project will ensure Nova Scotians have access to cutting-edge care in state-of-the-art facilities for generations to come,” says Health Minister Michelle Thompson. Work to enclose portions of the structure began this past summer and will continue into the new year. Officials say the project is still on schedule to be complete in the fall of 2030 and open to patients in the fall of 2031. The total project cost is pegged at $7.4 billion.
