N.S. expands free transit pass program to Cape Breton

Eligible low-income residents will be able to access transit around Cape Breton for free as Nova Scotia expands its Community Bus Pass Program.

Free Transit Cape Breton passes will be available to people who receive income assistance, their spouses and dependents, and Disability Support Program participants. Around 7,300 people in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) are eligible for a pass.

“Reliable transportation is essential for people to fully participate in their communities,” said Barbara Adams, minister of Opportunities and Social Development. “Thousands of people in Cape Breton now have the freedom to get to work, school, medical appointments and community activities – without the cost barrier.”

The program initially started in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The province says, starting Tuesday, people who are eligible for the passes can book an appointment online to have their photo taken for the pass at one of the Opportunities and Social Development offices in CBRM. The first appointments will be Nov. 12.

People will receive a temporary pass until the permanent one arrives in the mail. No proof of transit requirements is needed for the pass.

“We know how important transportation is to staying connected, accessing services within the community and maintaining independence. This program will make a meaningful difference for many residents by removing a barrier that can limit opportunity and participation in daily life,” said CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke.

The cost of the program will depend on how many people choose to access it.

According to the province, roughly 8,900 people currently use the program in HRM.
