A Nova Scotian clothing brand is showcasing local artwork in a new way. Dear Ocean’s new collection is using hand-painted artworks from Nova Scotian artist Warren Jardine to bring the local art scene to life. The brand’s co-creator Justin Munden says he started the brand after being tired of seeing computer-generated designs used so often. “I came up with the idea while shopping because I couldn’t really find what I was looking for, and I realized that Halifax is due for a new coastal apparel brand, and to make this brand special I really wanted the designs to be hand-painted artwork,” he said. Jardine has been an artist in Halifax for 10 years, selling her art at places like the Brewery Market. She says she wanted to help bring the true Nova Scotian spirit into a clothing brand. “I’ve always felt that there was a lack to the ode to Nova Scotia that is truly about the industries that fall here,” said Jardine. “When I paint, I paint loose and I just paint to go, I paint ready for clothing, and I love everything Nova Scotia-themed.” Munden says he wanted to make sure he produced quality pieces that match the local artwork they were showcasing. “I really wanted to match good material to match Warren’s beautiful art, so our t-shirts, everything is really well done.” Dear Ocean’s collection can be found on its website.
