SYDNEY — Officials on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island are warning residents to avoid flooded roads. Environment Canada says very heavy rainfall in the region is expected to continue through Saturday and Sunday, leading to localized flooding. The national weather agency says rainfall rates of 20 millimetres an hour are expected in some areas on the island, with up to 200 millimetres total expected. Cape Breton Regional Municipality says several roads in the Sydney and Glace Bay areas are closed due to flooding. Several videos posted to social media from the region show water rushing over roadways and breaking through barriers.
