Cape Breton Regional Police is once again warning residents of a heat pump sales scam. Police say they have received reports from residents in the Glace Bay and New Waterford area who have been visited by people claiming to be representatives from heat pump companies looking for customers. “These persons are not legitimate,” Insp. Joseph Farrell said in a news release. “They use pressure tactics to enter your home and provide social media ads claiming to be a legitimate company.” The scammers are reportedly asking for sensitive documents, such as copies of power bills or drivers licence information. Police say people should not provide any money, or any personal or financial information for them to conduct a credit check and/or begin a loan process. “If any sales people or service providers visit your residence, it is important to ensure they are legitimate before proceeding,” Farrell added. “Request professional ID, check their credentials, and even call the organization they claim to be representing, to verify the identity of the person(s) and company, and their purpose for being there.” Cape Breton Regional Police describe the latest suspects as a man and woman dressed in dark casual clothing. One resident also reported seeing them drive a Honda Civic-type vehicle that is white in color. Fraudulent activity can be reported to Cape Breton police by calling (902) 563-5151 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
