As students across Nova Scotia get ready to take on a new year, the province is hoping new initiatives will help boost performances in classrooms. The Nova Scotia School Lunch Program is expanding again to include all high schools across the province. Students will have access to healthy meals like caesar salad wraps, ramen-style noodle bowls and more. The director of Oxford Learning, Lorelei Burgess, says it’s a great step towards setting students up for success. “I think it’s certainly going to make classroom environments better for everybody, because when kids are well-fed and nourished, they’re able to pay attention, they’re able to focus, they’re able to concentrate and engage in the classroom, more so than if they were hungry,” says Burgess. The province also says a new language arts curriculum will be introduced for Grades 3 to 6. “The curriculum places a strong focus on foundational skills and reflects research on the science of reading. It aligns with a structured literacy approach, providing students with clear, direct instruction on how to read and write,” the province said in a release. There will also be resources to support teachers as they implement the updated learning expectations in classrooms this fall. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
