A decision about the NorthStar Shelter in New Glasgow, N.S., could be getting close. Staff tell CTV News Atlantic a meeting is planned with the province for Tuesday to talk about the facility’s future. Late last month, the province pulled funding after the mayor and council unanimously voted to request the closure following complaints about increases in open drug use, vandalism and theft. The 20-bed shelter was given a 90-day notice. “The location is certainly not suitable as it is right now. I don’t deny the need for emergency shelter; there’s definitely a need for that. The location has to be carefully considered when you put those kinds of facilities into a community,” says Mayor Nancy Dicks. “I’m going to hold out faith that they are working with experts in the field and that all options are being looked at.” The province is considering moving towards a mix of shelter, transitional housing and supportive housing options. The 90-day window for the NorthStar Shelter, formerly known as Viola’s Place, closes on Dec. 23. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
