The IWK Hospital Foundation says a paramedic who died in a New Brunswick highway crash earlier this week was a dedicated volunteer. Two paramedics and a patient from Prince Edward Island died when a transport truck collided with an ambulance in Melrose, N.B., on Tuesday morning. In a social media post, the foundation said Mike MacKenzie served as a volunteer telethon operations committee chair on Prince Edward Island for 15 years. He retired from the role in 2020. “Mike was a bright light in this world,” the post reads. “He was kind. He was funny. He was always cheerful, always positive, and ever passionate about improving healthcare for children in his community.” The post said MacKenzie was an “incredible paramedic” who always tried to help people. “Our community is stronger for having had Mike a part of it, and his presence and legacy of compassion will always be felt in the work that we and our dedicated volunteers continue to do,” the post reads.
