Infrastructure improvements are coming to Moncton, N.B., with the goal of building more homes. More than $25 million from all three levels of government will be used to expand existing infrastructure on Elmwood Drive. The provincial government is spending nearly $8 million, the federal government is contributing $9.6 million and the City of Moncton is spending more than $7.5 million on the project. The province says the money will be used to increase sanitary sewer capacity and for new stormwater infrastructure on a section of Elmwood Drive. The section of the road affected by underground work will be rebuilt and widened to four lanes. Officials say the project could allow for up to 1,300 new housing units in the area. “This is a critical and necessary investment in a growing area of our city,” said Moncton Mayor Shawn Crossman in a news release. “Upgrading and expanding underground infrastructure, like our sanitary and stormwater systems, as well as improving and widening the roadway for the benefit of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, are important enhancements that serve current residents and open the door to future development.” A multi-purpose trail is also being planned as part of the project.
