A Halifax fashion designer has raised enough money to donate 12 wigs for local breast cancer patients. John Michael Brewer held a fundraiser in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in memory of one of his close friends who passed away nearly 20 years ago. “Beautiful U R: Raising a Toast by Raising Funds” ended up raising more than $2,000 through the sale of hats, T-shirts, and donations. Brewer connected with the Sunshine Room through the QEII Foundation after a recommendation from another friend who received support there while battling breast cancer. “This fundraiser was about more than wigs – it was about supporting confidence, dignity and a sense of self for women navigating one of the hardest chapters of their lives,” Brewer told CTV News. “The team at the Sunshine Room does this every day and it was an honour to support their meaningful work.” With the money raised, Brewer said he was able to buy and donate 12 wigs to the Sunshine Room. He officially made the donation on Monday. When he started the fundraiser, Brewer said his goal was to simply raise enough for one wig, so he said it’s “wonderful” to be able to donate 12.
