Anyone can adventure with the Wandering Wilsons’ travel journal for Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore

Author Natalie Frederick-Wilson talks about her new journal guide “Adventure is for Everyone” featuring Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore.

“Adventure is for Everyone” is a guided journal written for people and families trying to explore and appreciate Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Author Natalie Frederick-Wilson says adventure can start close to home.

Wilson’s family documents their adventures on social media so she says the book has been a long time coming.

“It’s actually one of our followers that kept saying, ‘You have to put a book together,’” Frederick-Wilson says. “We decided to do the Eastern Shore because we heard someone say it’s the forgotten shore.”

Frederick-Wilson says the Eastern Shore is gorgeous but the “Wandering Wilsons” didn’t have any knowledge of the area before they started exploring in 2019. She says her family took a lot of photos of the beautiful homes, cliffs and islands along the route.

“We could not believe that people were missing out on this,” she says. “And there weren’t many people there.”

Some of the family photos appear in the new book but Frederick-Wilson says it’s a journal so people can collect memories in the pages.

“I want people to write that book up,” she says. “I want them to cross things off. I want them to put memories in.”

Frederick-Wilson says she wants people writing in her book to feel like it’s their adventure to be notated and planned.

“I have a planning section as well because adventure can feel overwhelming if you haven’t gone someplace before,” she says.

The adventures in Frederick-Wilson’s book are inexpensive but there are also scannable QR codes for armchair travellers who aren’t able to adventure anymore.

“Anyone can take it, they can dream, they can go or they can go together,” she says

“Adventure is for Everyone” is available at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Black Cultural Centre and will soon be at the Canadian Museum of Immigration. Adventurers can also order it from the Wandering Wilsons’ website.

Frederick-Wilson says she plans to publish four more journals, one for each of the province’s main regions.

“We have all the photos gathered already. Now it’s just putting it together.”
