A Cape Breton councillor says drugs and crime have become enough of a problem in one of the communities he represents that a public meeting will be held about the issue later this week. District 11 councillor Darren O’Quinn told CTV Atlantic on Monday he expects at least 300 people to voice their concerns at a meeting on Wednesday evening. O’Quinn says the drug problem has led to a number of thefts and some residents are fed up and feel unsafe. “We have a serious problem with drugs in our community and it seems to be fueling a lot of crime in our community as well,” O’Quinn said on Monday. “A lot of theft from businesses, from people’s yards, from garages and homes and stuff. It’s just – it’s never been this bad before in the town of New Waterford. We have always had issues, but it’s at an all-time high now.” The public meeting will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the New Waterford and District Community Centre. Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Stephen MacKinnon and CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke are also expected to be in attendance. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
