Labour Day was a busy day for returning University of New Brunswick students living on campus – it was move in day. For several fourth-year students in Fredericton, like psychology student Lucy MacLaren, it marked the start of their last year. “It’s a little sad because it’s last year, so it’s like the beginning of the end, but yeah I love it here,” she said. MacLaren is from Ontario, but she’s coming to New Brunswick’s capital after spending the summer in British Columbia. “I just love it here. It’s very like Hallmark town, very cute. And everyone’s super friendly,” she said. Grand Falls, N.B., resident Carissa Levesque is also in her final year of her Bachelor of Science program and is welcoming a return to campus. “It’s nice to come back to where your friends are, and kind of to like-minded people,” she said. “I’m going to get ready to actually get into a career. I’m going to go into teaching, so I’m really excited to get into that,” she added. According to the University of New Brunswick’s website, the university hosts over 10,600 students from more than 100 countries — like Elana Iagodina, who’s travelled from Germany for an exchange semester in Fredericton. She’s only been in the city for several days, but she’s already warming up to it. “Everyone’s so lovely and friendly and nice. And I really like the city, it’s cute and cozy,” she said. For many students, the start of classes on Tuesday will mark the beginning of their academic careers. First-year kinesiology students Zach Robichaud and David Slabodar moved to Fredericton from Moncton just days ago. “I’m excited for the new year, I’m ready to learn a lot of new things,” Robichaud said. “I really like the city, it’s like on a hill, you can really see the nice view in the background,” Slabodar added, Classes at the University of New Brunswick begin on Tuesday, while others like Saint Thomas University and the Université de Moncton begin on Wednesday.
