The only 50-metre pool in New Brunswick is getting more than $18 million from the federal and provincial governments for renovations ahead of the 2029 Canada Summer Games. Ottawa and New Brunswick will each spend more than $9.3 million on the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John, according to a news release. The renovations for the 41-year-old facility include replacing the main electrical system, expanding the leisure pool, incorporating gender-inclusive changing areas and making the site universally accessible. “This renovation project will modernize and extend the lifespan of the facility, providing lasting benefits for the community and our next generation of athletes for at least another 40 years,” said Wayne Long, MP for Saint John-Kennebecasis, in the release. The renovations are expected to last for 15 to 18 months and will start on Dec. 20. The estimated total cost of the project is roughly $29 million. “As we look ahead to welcoming the country for the 2029 Canada Summer Games, modernizing the Canada Games Aquatic Centre will prepare Saint John for a world-class competition while building a lasting legacy,” said Adam van Koeverden, secretary of state (sport). Marianne Limpert, a 1996 Olympic silver medalist, said the pool was a big part of her career. “Definitely having that here in the province is a huge benefit, especially for athletes that are looking to go on and compete internationally because all of the major competitions are in a 50-metre pool,” she said. Saint John and Moncton are set to host the 2029 games. With files from CTV News Atlantic’s Avery MacRae For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
