A Moncton-based anti-crime coalition says they’re more than happy to work with Shawn Crossman, the city’s new mayor. Last week, the Enough is Enough coalition sent a news release singling out eight Moncton candidates who didn’t respond to their survey on public safety. Six of the eight won Monday night, including Crossman, but coalition member Jo-Anne Phillips said the mayor-elect is on their side. “He was the first to sign the coalition as a councillor,” said Phillips. The coalition was formed last fall and has over 3,000 petition signatures urging the federal, provincial and municipal governments to do more to fight crime in the Greater Moncton area. Phillips said Crossman has attended many of their meetings and they feel he is committed to the issues of improving public safety in the city. “When you have chats with Shawn, I mean he speaks public safety is his number one [concern],” said Phillips. “Shawn knows there’s a problem, he agrees with us there’s a problem.” The bulk of the crime in the tri-community area is in downtown Moncton inside Ward 2. Two new councillors were elected to that ward Monday night and Phillips said the coalition is looking forward to working with Kristin Cavoukian and Marc Leger. “Marc and Kristin both I think have some really good energy and ideas and they definitely recognize that there is a problem. They’re with us. The path, the conversation, really seems like we’re in synergy on the concerns,” said Phillips.
