Earlier this month, lawmaker Megan Mitton threw her hat in the ring to become leader of the New Brunswick Green Party and it now seems she will run unopposed for the role. Mitton, who has served as MLA for Memramcook-Tantramar since 2018, is the only registered contestant for the 2026 leadership race, according to the Green Party. Mitton also served as deputy leader of the party from 2023 to 2026. “I first got into politics because I felt the urgency to address the health-care and climate crises, and now more than ever, we need leaders who will act to safeguard the health and safety of New Brunswickers, and bring fairness and affordability to our economy,” Mitton said in a previous statement announcing her candidacy. Last June, David Coon, who served as leader of the Green Party for more than a decade, announced he would be stepping down, triggering the search for a new head of the party.
