A fall tradition in the New Brunswick capital has just reached a new milestone. The Fredericton Fall Classic recorded more than 1,000 participants this weekend, for the first time in its 43-year history. “We’re really proud of how the race has grown and become a tradition through the community.” said Sara Young, the event’s race director. “People of all disciplines, and all backgrounds like to come, and we love to support people… fast, first race, PB, whatever their goal is.” Sunday’s 10km and half marathon distances were sold out, while Saturday’s kid’s races had over 200 participants compared to 120 last year. The event’s start and finish line is located at Government House, with a half-marathon route that includes both sides of the river. Volunteers with the Capital City Road Runners organize the event each year. “I think that people appreciate that if you come, the race is going to be well organized,” said Young. “We’ve got a lot of flat, fast trails, and the biggest thing we’re proud of is that we give out pies for first place in every age group.” The winner of the half-marathon’s male division on Sunday was Evan Arsenault of Quispamsis, N.B., with a finish time of one hour, fourteen minutes, and forty-six seconds. The winner of the half-marathon’s female division on Sunday was Courtney Burchill of Quispamsis, N.B. with a finish time of one hour, twenty-five minutes, and forty seconds.
