A Campbellton, N.B., councillor and his wife died after an accident over the weekend, according to the Campbellton Regional Community. In a Facebook post, the community said Councillor Gaëtan Cormier and his wife Rose-Marie Charest died on Sunday. Cormier was first elected to council in 2022 and served as alderman for the former Village of Atholville from 2012 to 2022. “We are heartbroken at the loss of our council colleague,” said deputy mayor Luc Couturier. “Gaëtan was a dedicated member of council with a long track record of community involvement, especially in his home community of Atholville. He represented his constituents very well and his contribution will be missed. “On behalf of council, staff and residents, I offer our most sincere condolences to the Cormier and Charest families, especially their daughters Prudence and Marie-Lyne.” According to Cormier’s councillor page on the Campbellton website, he graduated from Polyvalente Roland-Pépin and worked for NB Power from 1987 to 2022. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Village of Atholville for 15 years and organized fundraisers for the Campbellton Regional Hospital.
