What’s open and closed in the Maritimes on Labour Day

Monday is Labour Day, meaning many businesses are closed for the holiday, which is a designated retail closing day. Many services and stores around the region are affected by closures while others remain open on reduced hours.

Retail and grocery

• Major grocery stores are closed for the holiday including Atlantic Superstore, Costco, Sobeys, and Walmart, although smaller local stores such as Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth and the Kingswood Market in Hammonds Plains are open
• All NSLC stores will be closed for the day
• WestSide Beer and Wine Spirits and the Beer Market are open
• N.B. Liquor and Cannabis N.B. are closed
• P.E.I. liquor and cannabis stores will be closed
• Major malls across the region are closed
• The Saint John City Market is also closed for the day
• In P.E.I., the Panda Mart in Charlottetown and the Kensington Food Basket are open
• Pharmacies across the region are open on reduced holiday schedules

Transportation

• Halifax Transit is offering a reduced holiday service. The Alderney ferry service will operate on a reduced schedule, while the Woodside ferry will not be in service
• Parking around the HRM is free
• Saint John Transit and Fredericton Transit will not be in service
• T3 Transit in P.E.I. is not operating in Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall, Summerside, or rural parts of the province but there will be service from Charlottetown and Summerside to Cavendish

Services

• Municipal offices and public libraries across the region are closed
• Service New Brunswick, Service Nova Scotia, and Service P.E.I. locations are all closed
• The 311 call centre in Halifax said it will only be taking urgent calls for the holiday
• Waste collection services in the HRM in areas that typically collect on Monday are instead being collected on Saturday
• Waste collection services will not be collecting on P.E.I. for the holiday
