Many schools in the Maritimes were closed Tuesday after a large, powerful Nor’easter brought heavy snow and high winds to the region.

Weather alerts

Yellow winter storm warnings and yellow snowfall warnings in place across the Maritimes have ended.

A coastal flooding statement issued by Environment Canada for much of the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia has also ended.

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says the rough surf will diminish through Tuesday.

School closures

All schools in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were closed.

Some schools in New Brunswick were closed.

Other closures

All municipal offices delayed opening in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) until 10 a.m. The in-person budget committee and regional council meeting was also be delayed until 10 a.m.

Most municipally-owned and operated recreation facilities in the Halifax area delayed opening until 10 a.m.

All provincial civil service offices in the Kings County area of P.E.I. opened at 12:30 p.m. All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince, East Prince, Queens, and Charlottetown areas will remain closed.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) said city hall and police buildings would have a delayed opening of 10 a.m.

Power

As of 5 p.m., there were 34 active power outages in Nova Scotia affecting 105 customers.

At that time in New Brunswick, there was one outage affecting 8 customers and two Maritime Electric customers were without power on P.E.I.

Travel

Several flights at Halifax Stanfield International Airport were cancelled Tuesday, but as of 5 p.m. the majority were showing on time.

Travellers are being asked to confirm their flight status before going to the airport.

Due to forecasted weather conditions, Marine Atlantic anticipates schedule impacts to the following Wednesday sailings:

• The 11:15 p.m. North Sydney, N.S., crossing to Port aux Basques, N.L.
• The 11:30 p.m. Port aux Basques crossing to North Sydney

The Fundy Rose departure time from Saint John, N.B., on Tuesday was revised due to the weather.

The 9 a.m. departure was changed to 10 a.m.

The Digby, N.S., departure remains at 4 p.m.

The Tancook Ferry in Chester, N.S., said it would resume service Tuesday morning.

Saint John Transit’s Route 21 did not begin operating until 2:35 p.m.

Codiac Transpo in Moncton, N.B., suspended service until 10 a.m.

Kings Transit in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley was not running Tuesday.

Snow routes for Halifax Transit buses remained in effect.

Transit was running normally in the CBRM. Route 5 (Northside) began service at 10 a.m.

Parking ban

The HRM overnight winter parking ban will continue to be enforced in both Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“We have had those back-to-back-to-back snow events which can also create challenging conditions because we have that accumulation that’s built up. So, we are dealing with an already existing ice pack which can make clearing a little bit more difficult,” says Laura Wright, senior public affairs officer for the city.

“Every system that passes through is unique, whether it be the type of precipitation, how much or when it falls. This one was a little bit different because we saw more daytime snow fall yesterday and so crews were working all through the night to clear snow as best as they could.”

Garbage collection

Curbside collection of solid waste for Tuesday is rescheduled for Saturday in the HRM.

Collection will proceed as scheduled in the CBRM.

Canada Post

Canada Post has issued Red Delivery service alerts for:

• Antigonish, N.S.
• Moncton, N.B.
• Northeastern New Brunswick
• Saint John, N.B.
• P.E.I.

There are no deliveries in the above areas due to “severe winter conditions.”
