Winter storm expected mid-week in the Maritimes

A mix of snowy, rainy and windy conditions are expected this week across much of the Maritimes.

Environment Canada issued special weather statements for southeastern areas of New Brunswick, and the entirety of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for a weather system Tuesday into Wednesday.

“While it is too soon to give specific details, a winter storm is expected beginning Tuesday afternoon with the worst conditions expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning,” read the weather statement Sunday.

“Slight deviations in the track of this system could change snowfall amounts significantly. However less snow is expected for the coast, especially the Atlantic coast, where precipitation will fall partially as rain.”

Strong winds could also result in tree branches breaking which could cause damage to utility lines.

New Brunswick

Environment Canada said southeastern areas of New Brunswick could see 15 cm or more of snowfall mid-week.

Northeasterly winds are expected between 60 to 80 km/h.

Nova Scotia

Environment Canada said potential snowfall amounts in Nova Scotia could range between 15 to 35 cm with possibly higher amounts.

Significantly less is expected near and along the Atlantic coastline, where 30 to 50 mm of rainfall is expected.

Potential wind gusts could range between 70 to 90 km/h from the northeast.

Prince Edward Island

On Prince Edward Island, the weather agency is forecasting 15 cm of snowfall or more Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday afternoon.

Northeasterly winds are expected between 60 to 80 km/h.
