First North Atlantic right whale calf of the season spotted near South Carolina

The first North Atlantic right whale calf of the season has been spotted near South Carolina.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium Institute found the calf with its mother Champagne east of Litchfield by the Sea on Nov. 28. The calf’s grandmother Spindle has given birth to 10 calves.

Oceana Canada said 11 calves were born this year, down from 20 in 2024. The population currently stands at roughly 380 whales, with 70 reproductive females remaining.

There were no confirmed right whale deaths this year. Last year there were five reported deaths. Common causes of death for whales include entanglements and vessel strikes.

“Fisheries and Oceans Canada must urgently accelerate the transition to ropeless gear in high-risk areas and release its long-overdue Whalesafe Fishing Gear Strategy,” Oceana Canada said.

“Transport Canada must expand the restricted shipping area in the Cabot Strait and make slowdowns there mandatory for the full season. Protection should not be optional; it is the only path to saving right whales.”
