Snow cleanup continues in Maritimes

Snowy, windy and cold conditions continue in the Maritimes Tuesday as a storm slowly moves out of the region.

Weather alerts

All weather warnings and statements in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have ended.

Yellow snowfall warnings have also ended across mainland Nova Scotia, though they remain in place for Cape Breton.

An additional five to 10 cm is expected, though more is possible over the Cape Breton Highlands, along with 40 to 60 km/h wind gusts.

“Snow will taper to flurries this afternoon, except over the Highlands where possible snow squalls may develop tonight. Visibilities are likely to be reduced in blowing snow through the day today,” warning reads.

“Travel will likely be challenging. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”

Brynn Budden, spokesperson with the Halifax Regional Municipality, said they had a lot of delayed openings on Tuesday.

“The snow has been light and fluffy and crews have had no trouble moving it around,” Budden said. “Crews were getting onto residential streets and then we got quite a big of snow overnight, which put them back on the main roads.”

Travel

Halifax Stanfield International Airport said just before 8 a.m. that aircraft operations are temporarily suspended until airfield conditions improved.

The airfield reopened at 11:15 a.m.

“Please note, it will take some time for airline scheduled operations to normalize,” reads a post from the airport.

“We appreciate your patience. Please continue to check your flight status directly with your airline before coming to the airport.”

The majority of flights at New Brunswick airports are currently on time, though some flights from Ontario have been cancelled.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled the following Tuesday sailings:

• The 11:45 a.m. crossing from Port aux Basques, N.L., to North Sydney, N.S.
• The 12:30 p.m. crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques

The ferry service also anticipates potential schedule impacts to the following sailings:

• The 11:15 p.m. crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques
• The 11:30 p.m. crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney

Bay Ferries has revised the Saint John, N.B., departure of the Fundy Rose on Tuesday. The 9 a.m. crossing to Digby, N.S., has been changed to 11 a.m.

Snow routes for Halifax Transit buses are expected Tuesday. The municipality says passengers should also expect delays and allow extra time to arrive at their destination. Access-a-bus service is also expected to be delayed.

Saint John Transit buses are operating, though there may be delays and/or detours due to road conditions.

Kings Transit in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley delayed service until noon. Only Route 1 is operating between Wolfville and Greenwood and only servicing stops on Highway 1 ( the Evangeline Trail). All other routes are cancelled.

Transit Cape Breton originally said it would resume service at 4 p.m. but it released an update at that time, stating service would would suspended for the remainder of the day.

School closures

All schools in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. are closed Tuesday.

In New Brunswick, the bulk of the school closures are in southeastern parts of the province.

Other closures, delays

The province of Nova Scotia said government offices would open at noon due to weather conditions.

All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince area of P.E.I. will open at 1 p.m. Offices in the East Prince, Queens, Charlottetown, and Kings County areas will remain closed for the day.

The Halifax Regional Municipality said all municipal offices would delaying opening until 10 a.m.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) offices, including city hall, C200 and CBRM-owned recreational facilities, and Cape Breton Regional Police Service buildings will be closed for the day.

The County of Annapolis’ municipal office will remain closed.

Some Health PEI services are closed or delayed due to weather and uncertain driving conditions.

All branches and departments of Halifax Public Libraries delayed opening until 12 p.m.

The opening of all CFB Halifax properties (including Shearwater) was delayed until 10 a.m. due to winter storm conditions.

Parking ban

HRM says the overnight winter parking ban will continue to be enforced (in both Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central), from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Vehicles must be off municipal streets during those hours.

“Regardless of the status of an overnight winter parking ban, or whether you have received a notification, vehicles can be towed, day or night, at any time of year, if they are interfering with snow-clearing operations,” reads a municipal release.

The municipality says it towed 23 vehicles on Monday night.

Power

As of 12:45 p.m., there were 10 active outages in Nova Scotia affecting 67 customers.

At that time there were three outages affecting 45 customers in New Brunswick and two customers without power on P.E.I.

Curbside collection

The CBRM says curbside collection is cancelled.

Valley Waste Resource Management collection will take place on accessible roads.

Curbside collection of solid waste in the HRM is planned to continue as scheduled.
