TORONTO - A coroner's inquest into the death of a young woman in an Ontario prison that was adjourned indefinitely in May has now been delayed until September.

Ashley Smith, a 19-year-old from Moncton, N.B., choked herself to death in an Ontario prison in 2007.

The coroner's inquest into her death started on May 16 but heard just three days of evidence before coroner Dr. Bonita Porter put it on hold.

The coroner's office said the delay was for Porter to take time to consider a couple of motions, which the office now says she will rule on next week.

But a spokeswoman says the inquest itself -- which was originally scheduled to sit for May and June before a two-month summer break -- won't resume until Sept. 12.

Porter today summoned the many lawyers involved in the inquest to discuss an idea to webcast the proceedings when they resume.
