Here are the five things you need to know this Thursday: The Pope has issued a document laying out a theological argument on the need to curb climate change; nine people, including a state senator, are dead after a shooting in Charleston, S.C.; Sen. Don Meredith has been kicked out of the Conservative caucus; a mother is furious after pictures of her daughter were used in advertisements without her knowledge; and possibly the largest toxic algae bloom ever recorded is sweeping across the Pacific coast of North America.

Plus, today we have #LifeHack tips and tricks on how to take care of your lawn with minimal fuss.

1. Deadly shooting in Charleston: Nine people were killed in what police are describing as a hate crime in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday night. Police say a white man started shooting during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church.

2. Pope on climate change: Pope Francis has issued a 190-page document laying out a theological argument on the need to curb climate change and protect the environment. He says the solution will require self-sacrifice and bold cultural revolution.

3. Out of caucus: Sen. Don Meredith has been kicked out of the Conservative caucus after the Toronto Star reported he was facing an accusation that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a teenager. The girl alleged the Pentecostal pastor started a relationship with her two years ago, when she was 16 years old, and they had sex twice after she turned 18.

4. Mother furious: A B.C. mother is outraged after a photo of her daughter, who has Down syndrome, was used by a Swiss-based genetics laboratory to promote a prenatal test for Down syndrome. After contacting the company, the family realized the picture had been uploaded to a stock photo website as well.

5. Attack of the Giant Algae Bloom: What may be the largest toxic algae bloom ever recorded is sweeping across the Pacific coast of North America, leaving a path of destruction. Although levels of a harmful phytoplankton are much lower in B.C., than along the U.S. coast, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has closed shellfish harvesting for some areas of Vancouver Island.
