The Montreal Alouettes officially put defensive end Michael Sam on the suspended list on Monday.

On Friday, the CFL team said in a statement that Sam would be leaving training camp “for personal reasons.”

They added that the door would be open for Sam to return “whenever he feels ready.”

Sam’s agent told CTV Montreal that Sam had been suffering from migraines for two days before the announcement was made. Head coach Tom Higgins said he didn’t know what Sam’s health status was since his departure.

“We wouldn’t want to put him out if he’s under the weather, but we’ll wait and see,” he told CTV Montreal on Friday.

The 25-year-old made headlines as the first openly-gay CFL player when he joined the team in May.

The Alouettes also released six players from the team on Monday.
