Once, in a time between the invention of fire and the dawn of the iPhone, there was an age when Facebook didn't exist.

Users were forced to re-live that age on Friday afternoon when the popular social media site briefly went offline, much to their chagrin.

The outage lasted about 20 minutes for the main site, but some users continued to experience problems with the Facebook mobile app, even after the main site came back up.

The Facebook site had only a simple, frustrating explanation for the outage: "Sorry, something went wrong."

Social media-starved users turned to other web platforms to express their frustration over Facebook's technical issues.

The mobile app and Messengers services appeared to still be operational.

It's not the first time the site has suddenly gone down. Facebook and it's sister site, Instagram, were both out of commission for an hour on Jan. 27, 2015. Facebook also went offline for about 20 minutes last year, on Aug. 1.

Both outages triggered similar flurries of activity on Twitter.
