From movie screen to mainstream?

During an interview conducted during the recent NBA All-Star Game, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield -- the individual behind the design and development of many of the company's most-beloved sports shoes – said that self-lacing shoes would be launched sometime in 2015.

The shoes will pay homage to the futuristic Air Mag sneakers worn by Michael J. Fox in the 1989 movie "Back to the Future Part II," which is set in the year 2015.

Hatfield did not provide details on whether the "power laces" would be added to a new generation of Nike shoe models already in existence, or whether the company would create a special pair dedicated to the film.

In either case, fans of the famous film trilogy will be excitedly anticipating their release after a special limited edition in 2011 got both movie and sneaker fans buzzing.

Nike auctioned off 1,500 pairs of Air Mag sneakers that replicated the appearance of the shoes worn by Michael J. Fox but did not feature the lacing technology.

But fans may be left wondering when they'll have a chance to try out the other innovative accessory that had a starring role in "Back to the Future Part II" -- the "hoverboard," a kind of flying skateboard.
