It's a coronation in Calgary as Mayor Naheed Nenshi is re-elected while former councillor Don Iveson takes over the top job in Edmonton.

Voters across Alberta headed to the polls on Monday in municipal elections.

Nenshi easily defeated former councillor Jon Lord and seven other hopefuls to win his second term as mayor of Alberta's biggest city.

He became a national figure this summer for his tireless efforts to rally Calgarians swamped by heavy flooding.

In Edmonton, three city councillors vied to replace retiring incumbent Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel but Iveson led in the polls throughout the campaign.

The 34-year-old captured the imaginations of many voters with Kennedy-esque pleas for Edmonton to lead on an innovation agenda.
