OTTAWA -- The federal Liberal party says it has settled a lawsuit with a man who argued he had been wrongly disqualified to run for the nomination in an Ottawa-area riding.

The party says in a statement that David Bertschi answered "honestly and to the best of his ability" all questions put to him by the central committee that green-lighted candidates.

The statement also praises Bertschi as a "hard-working" and respected lawyer in Ottawa.

The statement says nominations are often hard-fought and can "occasionally cause strains" within the party, but that the Liberals are "pleased" to have resolved the legal feud with Bertschi.

The party didn't outline the details of the settlement, only that the legal actions would be dismissed without costs.

The unsigned statement also says the party will have no further comment on the matter.

Bertschi launched a lawsuit against the party, campaign executives and leader Justin Trudeau in the aftermath of a bitter nomination in the riding of Orleans where retired general Andrew Leslie became the party's candidate an eventually MP.

He alleged in court documents that the party wrongfully disqualified Bertschi as a potential candidate in the 2015 election so the Liberals could parachute Leslie into the riding.

Bertschi had previously run for the party unsuccessfully in the 2011 federal election.
