EDMONTON - Officials with Alberta Elections are investigating whether $300,000 worth of donations to the Tories from Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz, his family and associates broke campaign laws.

The office says there is enough information to merit a formal investigation.

The opposition Wildrose party and the NDP asked the office last week to investigate after documents revealed Katz, executives with the Katz Group and his family donated to Premier Alison Redford's Tories in the spring election.

The Tories say they have documentation to prove they received multiple donations and that no group or individual contributed more than the maximum $30,000.

However, there are reports that Katz delivered all the money, plus an extra $130,000, in one cheque.

The money represented 20 per cent of the total amount raised by the Tories, who won a majority government on April 23.
