Two Calgary families are in mourning and coming to grips with how to raise the newborn infant that survived the head-on collision that killed both of her young parents.

Police say it was a miracle that seven-week-old Ysa Melnyk survived the terrible crash that killed her father Michael, 26, and her mother Merin Cherie, 22, both of Calgary.

The parents were killed instantly when their Mercedes crossed the centre line on a highway southwest of Calgary Friday night and struck an oncoming pickup truck.

"To me, it's a miracle the baby survived," said RCMP Cpl Jason Pasloske.

Ysa was securely strapped into a baby car seat at the time of the crash, which likely saved her life, he said.

The child was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition. She is out of intensive care, and family members hope she will be released from hospital within the next two days.

The 54-year-old driver of the pickup was also in serious but stable condition.

Police say they do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the collision, but the crash is still under investigation.

"There were witness reports that just prior to the collision the Mercedes was observed swerving into the oncoming lane, but at this point we haven't determined why it swerved in there," said Pasloske.

Michael Melnyk was not trying to pass another vehicle and investigators are looking at other possibilities, such as driver distraction.

The young couple was on the way home from a family wedding outside of Cochrane, Alta. at the time of the crash.

Merin Melnyk's sister, Eden, and her husband, Dalyn, were not far behind the Melnyks on Highway 8 as they travelled home from the wedding.

Both couples had pulled over to the side of the road to take photographs about half an hour before the crash.

"(Eden and Dalyn) were coming down Highway 8 and came upon the accident and recognized the car of course immediately and they were there before the emergency response teams were able to be there," Merin's mother, Cheri Litchfield, told CTV Calgary.

Merin's father, David Litchfield, remembered his son-in-law as "a great husband" and "a wonderful man."

"He was a man of integrity," Litchfield said. "Mike was true, he was true to himself and he was true to others."

Cheri Litchfield said she wants Ysa to know "her mother was gracious in every way, not just physically but spiritually. She was emotionally generous and the sweetest person. So kind, so good."

Merin Melnyk's sister and brother-in-law are to take Ysa home with them when she is released from hospital. The family has set up a trust fund for the little girl. Members of the public can donate to the Ysa Melnyk Trust, c/o Tingle Merrett LLP at 639 5th Ave. S.W.
