Native leaders are calling on Ottawa to hold a public inquiry into health care in northern aboriginal communities following the death of a two-month-old girl.

Adrianna Ross died of pneumonia Saturday after visiting a nursing station three times in the God's Lake Narrows community about 500 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Manitoba's top native leaders say the death highlights the poor health care available to First Nations.

Grand Chief Derek Nepinak says First Nations deserve the same quality health care as other Canadians.

Most remote reserves are served by nursing stations that are only open during business hours.

A doctor is available sporadically and many patients end up being flown to Thompson or Winnipeg.
