ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A Newfoundland company must pay $13,000 in penalties after pleading guilty to not doing enough to reduce the exposure of employees and the local environment to asbestos dust.

The province's Department of Government Services issued a statement today saying that Kelloway Construction Ltd. was initially charged with six violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, but four were dropped.

The charges, laid in February, resulted from an investigation into demolition activity at the site of the former Janeway Hospital in St. John's in 2009.

In addition to a $10,000 fine, the company must pay the Government Services $3,000 to help with occupational health and safety education programs.

The government says Kelloway Construction entered its plea on June 29.
